About What's Happening Austin

This isn't an events calendar. It's a decision engine — not a firehose of every event in Austin, just the ones worth your time, and venues ranked by real data instead of who paid for placement.

The "ATX Worth It" score

Every venue with real Google review data gets a 0-100 "ATX Worth It" score. It starts from the venue's actual Google rating, then applies statistical shrinkage: a place's score is pulled toward the citywide average (4.5 stars) by an amount equivalent to 15 "phantom" reviews. That means a new restaurant with three 5-star reviews won't outrank a place with 3,000 real reviews at 4.6 stars — it has to earn a track record first. Venues with no rating data yet show no score at all, rather than a fabricated middle-of-the-road number.

No sponsored placement

Best-of lists and guides are built from the ranking above and editorial judgment — not paid inclusion. A venue can't buy its way onto a list.

Where events come from

Events are pulled automatically every night from a mix of real sources — venue calendars, ticketing platforms, city open data, and library programming — then deduplicated so the same show listed by two different sources doesn't show up as two events.

FAQ

What does the "ATX Worth It" score mean?
It's a 0-100 score built from real Google ratings, weighted so a handful of 5-star reviews can't outrank a place with thousands of real reviews. A brand-new spot with three perfect reviews gets pulled toward the citywide average until it earns a real track record; a place with no rating at all scores 0 rather than getting a made-up middle score.
Do you accept payment for placement on best-of lists or guides?
No. Rankings are computed from real rating data, not paid or sponsored placement.
Where does event data come from?
Events are pulled automatically from venue calendars, ticketing platforms, city open data, and library programming, then deduplicated and merged so the same show from two sources doesn't show up twice.
How often is this updated?
Event data refreshes nightly via an automated ingestion job. Guides and best-of lists are reviewed and updated periodically, not generated fresh on every visit.
